Description and History of Site:-
SELIA (1982): 'New Cross Gate station is on the line of the former London and Croydon Railway which ran from London Bridge to Croydon. The railway was opened in 1839 but the present structure is mid-Victorian. Originally called New Cross LBSC, it was renamed New Cross Gate in 1923. From 1845 to 1846 it was the northern terminus of the abortive atmospheric railway. A wall of stone block sleepers, perhaps from the original London and Croydon Railway can be seen at the southern end of the station. The line to Wapping via the Thames Tunnel was opened by the East London Railway in 1869.'
