Main terminus for the Ffestiniog Railway, which was opened in 1836, and the Welsh Highland Railway.

Situated among the old slate quays of Porthmadog Harbour the station opened in 1865.

During the winter of 2013 the old station was almost completely rebuilt to increase capacity following the reopening of the Welsh Highland Railway.

All lines were lifted and old pits filled in or modified, and new platform curb stones were placed on the new alignment. The buildings were not altered but were repainted and generally spruced up.
