Description and History of Site:-
Quarry in ownership of Lincolnshire Nature Trust. Remains of two brick lime kilns and explosive store.
Chalk quarry excavated on the site of a former Bronze age burial mound,, the remains of which are just visible on the left hand (north-eastern) rim of the quarry. In the 17th century the mound was used as the base for a windmill although the mill had gone out of use by later that century.
The first record of the quarry is on a map of 1838 and four circular lime-kilns are shown on the 1887 and 1907 OS maps. It is not known when the kilns went out of use. The bricks used for the kilns are believed to have been made at Farlesthorpe. The quarry was worked intermittently until the 1950's.
It is reported that during WWII the Home Guard used the quarry for hand grenade practice the grenades being thrown from the quarry rim,
