Skegness Brickworks (site of)

Description and History of Site:-
The brickworks were originally established by the Earl of Scarborough, in about 1872, as part of his scheme for the planned extensions to the town. The works produced a soft red brick, with a high sand content typical of brick manufactured using the boulder clay underlying the Marsh.

The extent of this site can be gauged from the early OS maps. The clay pits were subsequently used as a Municipal rubbish tip from the early 1950's. Whilst some of the brickworks buildings were used by the Skegness Cast Stone works, for the production of pre-cast concrete pipes etc.

The site has now been partially redeveloped for industrial/commercial use although the area of the clay pit remains undeveloped.
