Description and History of Site:-
Originally built to take a double-track railway line, Grand Sluice bridge over the River Witham comprises of two outer wrought-iron or early mild steel, bow-string arch trusses and a central plate girder supported on cast-iron circular caissons. Designed by Richard Johnson, chief engineer of the Great Northern Railway and built in 1884/5 to replace the earlier timber bridge of 1848. The iron-work was by the Stanningley Iron Work of Leeds.

The bridge now only carries a single track on the western span.

Note listing states it to be of riveted cast iron construction, which is incorrect.
