Description and History of Site:-
Founded in Manchester in 1815, by Wm Singleton Birch, a minerals merchant, the Melton Ross quarry was opened in1851 shortly after the opening of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway.
The first lime kiln a shaft kiln was commissioned in 1960.
The site is now one of the largest lime manufacturing plants in the UK, operating 4 high-capacity Maerz kilns, three installed in 1980 and a fourth in 1996.
