Description and History of Site:-
Currently (2019) brownfield, but approval for development into residential use has been approved.

Sunk to the Barnsley seam 1850-52 by the Thorps of Gawber Hall. Taken over by Fountain & Burnley in 1882. Briefly merged with nearby Woolley colliery in the mid 1980's, but closed altogether in 1987. On September 12th 1935 an explosion, probably initiated by shot-firing in an inadequately ventilated area, killed 19 men.
