Description and History of Site:-
Centaur Factory at western end of Great George St. Clothing factory and offices. Dated 1889. Red brick, ashlar and carved stone details, wrought-iron, slate roof. 6 storeys and attics on a prominent corner site.
Purpose-built clothing factory of 1889, occupied by J Campbell and Co., wholesale clothiers, 1890-c1903; Gaunt and Hudson, hat and cap manufacturers and wholesale clothiers, c1905-c1927; Thos Marshall and Co (Marlbeck), costumiers, c1927-c1966. Centaur Clothes Ltd by 1970, part of the Baird Textiles group by 1989 and an administrative headquarters until 1995. Planning applications to convert the ground floor into a gymnasium and the upper four floors into 41 flats was approved in April 1998, making this an early example in Leeds of this kind of conversion.
