Description and History of Site:-
The original mill building, part of a larger complex, is Grade II listed. Dating from the early 19th century, it is built of hammer-dressed stone with a stone slate roof and roof lights. The structure rises three storeys to the east and two to the west, with later additions reflecting the growth of the business.
The company was founded in 1766 by the grandfather of Zaccheus Hinchliffe, whose ventures included farming, cloth making, and coal mining. In 1860, Zaccheus expanded into worsted and woollen spinning, purchasing Hartcliffe Mill beside the River Dearne and close to the railway at Denby Dale. Worsted spinning ceased in 1980, after which the firm focused on woollen spinning. By 2018, production exceeded one million kilos of yarn annually, using fibres such as cashmere from China and Mongolia, lambswool from Australia, Bactrian camel hair from China, and vicuña from Peru. Their yarn is supplied worldwide to clients including Prada, Gucci, Chanel, Hugo Boss, Burberry, Dunhill, and Ralph Lauren.
Still family-run, the firm is now in its sixth generation of ownership. A notable family connection arose in 1957 when John Hinchliffe married Audrey Rippon, daughter of Colonel Reginald of Rippon Bros., Huddersfield. Their son continues as a company director today (2018).
