Motor Haulage Depot

Description and History of Site:-
Site of former transport depot with a small office building and self-contained flat facing Horton Street, known as Transport House. The transport depot was erected on part of the site of Harrison and Singleton's timber yard during the period between the wars, as road haulage began successfully to compete with rail transport. The building was executed in a modern, art-deco style with a stylish office building facing Horton Street. Following nationalisation, it became the local depot of the British Road Services until their operations were transferred to Low Moor in 1967, affecting the 117 employees there. During the 1970s and 1980s the premises were used by John Mackintosh & Sons Ltd. for warehousing purposes. The building was demolished in the mid 1980s, for the construction of the Pennine shopping development.
